Coignard was a student of Picot at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and exhibited in the Paris Salon from 1838 to 1863. While exhibiting in the Salon, Coignard gained a third-class medal in 1846, and a first-class medal in 1848.
Coignard began his Salon work with grand religious compositions, but changed his subject matter later in his career to landscapes paintings. His landscapes often include figures and grazing animals.
His works are shown in numerous museums from Algiers to Rochefort. This painting is a wonderful example of his late Salon work which is characterized by his effortlessly blending animals and figures into the landscape.
