Commode
Period Louis XV, Middle18th Century
Height: 39 inches
Width: 51 inches
Depth: 24 inches

Walnut with a curved front, three drawers, brass key plates with baskets of fruit, brass acanthus leaves handles, and arched feet.

Although Louis XV’s titular reign (including the regency) extended from 1715 to 1774, the style of the same name began to emerge about 1730 and was transformed into the so-called Louis XVI style beginning in 1760.  But these three decades saw the creation and development of a style that is the most brilliant, the most refined, and, arguably, the most charming ever devised.

This provincial commode highlights the three most important characteristics of Louis XV commodes: the balance of lines, the quality of materials and the finesse of decoration.
