Paintings In & Of Georgia During the 18th & 19th Centuries

A presentation by Spalding Nix

Please join Mr. Nix for a lecture on painting in Georgia during the 18th and 19th centuries.  Beginning with the earliest surviving works of art about Georgia by Philip Georg Friedrich von Reck from the 1730s and finishing with arguably America's premier African American artist at the turn of the century, Georgia based Henry Ossawa Tanner,  Mr. Nix will discuss the history of painting in and of Georgia.

Shown above is George Cooke's Tallulah Falls (1841). The painting features elements typical of the Hudson River School of landscape painting, particularly in its depiction of the picturesque and sublime. Tallulah Falls, located in the northeast Georgia mountains, comprises four waterfalls, three of which Cooke captures in his painting. Oil on canvas (35 3/4" x 28 3/4").
