Cylinder Desk Period Louis XVI, Late 18th Century Height: 41 inches Length: 36 inches Depth: 18 inches
Introduced during the Louis XV period, the cylinder desk became popular during Louis the XVI reign. This beautiful Louis XVI period piece features mahogany veneer, a marble top with a copper gallery, a slide-out shelf for a writing surface, ten drawers and tapered legs. The Cylinder top slides upward to reveal a nest of drawers and compartments. The decoration consists of field moldings of bronze on the panels and drawers and fluting on the legs.
The cylinder desk is also called “Bureau Kaunitz”, as it was allegedly introduced in France in the first half of the 18th century by Wenzel Anton von Kaunitz, then the ambassador of the Habsburg Empire to the French court. The French court adopted this type of desk with great enthusiasm.
