Fantin-Latour is best known for his romantic still-lifes. This work is characteristic of the direction Fantin-Latour’s painting took in the late 1890’s until his death in 1904. A strikingly similar example titled Pansies from 1903 is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s collection. Both share the same composition, treatment of the subject matter and painterly style.
