John Rathbone Harvey English School, 1870-1933 Still-life with Stocks Oil on panel 18 by 14 inches framed
As a young man he studied fine art at the Slade School in London where he was tutored by Hubert von Herkomer. Much of his later work reflected the influence of the Slade and in particular that of Herkomer. By the early 1890's he had returned to Birmingham where he had established a studio in the Sparkbrook area of the city. It was around this time that he commenced exhibiting professionally and for the ensuing forty years would participate in shows at many of Britain's most prestigious art institutions including the Royal Academy. Although remembered primarily as a figure painter, he also executed a number of landscapes and rather mor rarely, still-lifes. This particular example of his work is one such still-life, depicting a vase of stocks that can be dated to aroung 1895.
