The Bridge of Poissy
From The Seine
Oil on Canvas
18 by 23 inches framed
Poissy is a city outside Paris. From Saint Louis to modern times, the inhabitants of Poissy on the banks of the Seine made their living from agriculture, hunting and fishing. The son of Blanche de Castille and Louis VIII, the future Saint Louis, was baptized here on 25 April 1214.
With its two churches and three convents, Poissy was well known for being a town of intense religious activity.
The bridge over the Seine, with its military defenses, wheat mills and two inland ports, attracted fishermen, traders, travelers, farmers from the surrounding area, and armies during times of conflict.
Stamped “G. Materne” on the lower left and signed “Poissy ‘84” on the lower right.
