Giovanni Paolo PANNINI
1692 - 1765, Italian
A Meeting at the Ruins
Oil on Canvas
18 by 24 inches framed
Following the example of the French Classicists of the 17th century, the Italian painter Pannini is famous for his innovative and illusionist paintings of Rome’s ancient monuments. Although the ruins in his work are architecturally accurate, they are primarily a pretext to demonstrate multiple games of light by the subtle play of materials. This 18th century painting by a follower of Pannini is a classic example of Pannini’s study of antiquity and its remains combined with theatrical Roman figures.
