PÉLÉGRY
19th Century, French
Forest With Travelers
Oil on Canvas
26 by 32 inches framed
Born in L’Isle –d’Alby where his family had lived since 1545, Pélégry was a part of the 19th century Regionalist Movement, which celebrated life in the rural areas of France.
L’Isle-d’Alby is one of the three oldest villages of the Tarn region in France. The Tarn, a combination of forests, mountains, vineyards and plains, is situated in the Midi-Pyrenees Region, close to both Toulouse and Montpellier. The landscape and the travelers dress both suggest that this painting was painted near his hometown.
Signed “Arsene Pélégry 1856” lower right.
