Spalding McArthur Nix's
QUALIFICATIONS

 

Spalding Nix is an Atlanta native who majored in both Art History and Studio Art at the University of Virginia.  After working at Jackson Fine Art for a year after college, Mr. Nix attended the University of Georgia’s School of Law specializing in Intellectual Property & International Law. 

 

During his undergraduate and law school summers, Mr. Nix worked at The National Gallery of Art on their Design and Development team & in the General Counsel’s Office of The Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. 

 

After passing the Georgia Bar, Mr. Nix worked as an art consultant for Novo Arts & then for Sotheby’s in their Client Development group working closely with Sotheby’s Appraisal & Valuations Department. 

 

In the fall of 2003, Mr. Nix opened Spalding Nix Fine Art & Antiques.  The gallery's purpose is to bring fine, yet affordable, 17th & 18th century paintings and important 18th century French furniture to the southeast.  Mr. Nix travels to France regularly to purchases pieces for the gallery at auction.


Mr. Nix is an Associate of the American Society of Appraisers & specializes in the appraisal of fine art, antiques & collectibles.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

 

  • Spalding Nix Fine Art & Antiques, Atlanta, Georgia, spring 2003 through present.  Owner & Director.  Specializing in 17th & 18th century Old Master Paintings & important 18th century French furniture.
  • Sotheby’s, New York, N.Y., winter 2002 through spring 2003.  Worked in the Client Development Department which handled the strategies for Sotheby’s top 500 clients.
  • Novo Arts, New York, N.Y., fall 2002.  Worked as a corporate art consultant advising clients on collecting & investing in fine art.
  • Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., summer 2000.  Worked in the General Counsel’s Office on legal issues ranging from collections’ management to employment discrimination.
  • National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., summer 1995.  Worked with Design & Development Department installing shows & maintaining the permanent collection
  • Jackson Fine Art, Atlanta, Georgia, fall 1997 through summer 1998.  Worked as Registrar with Jane Jackson & gallery director Anna Walker Skillman displaying vintage & contemporary photographs to clients.  Responsible for in-house framing, gallery installation & receipt & delivery of photographs.
  • Georgia Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, Bureau of Cultural Affairs, Atlanta, Georgia, fall 1997 through summer 1998.  Answered legal questions from visual artists, writers, performers, & musicians; made referrals to pro bono lawyers; gave free legal advice to nonprofit arts organizations with budgets under $500,000; & conducted workshops on topical issues relating to the arts & the law including contracts, taxes & record keeping, & nonprofit incorporation.
  • Heath Gallery, Inc., Atlanta, Georgia, summer 1994.  Worked with gallery director displaying contemporary paintings, sculpture, drawings & graphics to clients.  Researched & updated artists’ files and catalogues.
