Wall Mirror Period Louis XVI, circa 1785 Carved & Gilded Wood 43 by 25 inches
The Louis XVI style marks a rekindled interest in the cult of reason. The Louis XV style’s relentless pursuit of originality, personified by the disorderly exuberance of the rocaille, was replaced by a freshness & ease inspired by antique models. This mirror is a wonderful example of the return to antiquity, which above all was a return to the straight line. Strict verticals & horizontals were the order of the day. Crowned by a trophy of musical instruments & olive leaves, this mirror also contains all of the decorative elements important to the Louis XVI style: antiquity, the Louis XIV style & nature.
