 Peace of Wild Things

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
and I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

-Wendell Berry
In Heather Lancaster’s most recent body of work, ink and water are given autonomy, with Lancaster redirecting or manipulating only as necessary.  This less controlled approach led to a greater connection with the work, resulting in a partnership between Artist and subject matter: intimate and intuitive. Shapes, lines and shadows emerge to represent more than the figure of the great blue heron, illuminating the beautiful, complex & mysterious form designed to exist seamlessly within its environment.  It is this study and observation of the natural world that for Lancaster, is peace. HANNAH HANLON
Southeastern:  Flora & Fauna
Originally from Massachusetts, Boston University CFA graduate, Hanlon relocated to Atlanta in 2006 for graduate studies in design at Portfolio Center. In 2019, after working in design, Hanlon began drawing again. In 2020, she debuted at Spalding Nix Fine Art in a solo show with a series of cross-hatched extra fine India ink drawings of aquatic creatures and a grid of 25 photorealistic colored pencil drawings of beetles. In her most recent body of work, Hanlon uses colored pencil to explore Southeastern flora and fauna. Through these drawings Hanlon encourages the viewer to consider the biodiversity & beauty of their own backyard. Using collected plant specimens, pinned insects, and her own video stills/photography as visual reference, Hanlon draws upon her design background to create unlikely moments driven by color, dynamic composition, and detail to celebrate the beauty and wonder of familiar species.  Trish Andersen, Jordan Baker, Evan Blackwell-Helgeson, Ashley Woodson Bailey, Jamie Bourgeois, David Boyd, Amanda Brazier, Amanda Joy Brown, Caroline Bullock, Marc Chatov, Myrtie Cope, Eilis Crean, Laura Dargan, John Dean, Virginie Drujon-Kippelen, Peter Essick, Julie Ferris, Jerushia Graham, Susan Hable, Heather Bird Harris, Kerry Hays, Andrew Herzog, Robert Hightower, Blair Hobbs, Tim Hunter, McLean Jenkins, Carol John, Cynthia Knapp, Sarah Lamb, Carlyle Wolfe Lee, Thad Lee, Chris Little, Shelby Little, Susan Maakestad, Jennifer McKinnon, Charlie McCullers, Cecilia Montalvo, Kate Hooray Osmond, Esteban Patiño, Scotty Peek, Guy Robinson, Sachi Rome, Tokie Rome-Taylor, Katherine Sandoz, Richard Thomas Scott, Corrina Sephora, Aimée Farnet Siegel, Jerry Siegel, Richard Skoonberg, Spencer Sloan, Ellen Kierr Stein, Nancy Talero, Gregor Turk, Christina Renfer Vogel, Claire Whitehurst, Jim Wise, Zhou Peng
